The event on Sunday July 12 at noon is being run by the town’s carnival committee.

In a bid to attract a wide range of fast and fun entries, there are eight classes including children and youth groups, adults, pubs and hotels, shops and businesses and other towns and villages. Prizes will be for the best fancy dress and fastest entries.

Carnival chairman Tony Shipp said: "It will be a fun event but I am sure some businesses, such as garages, will be competitive."

All soapboxes will be checked for safety at motorsport-style scrutineering, and all drivers must wear protective headgear or helmets. A local motorsport club is also providing timing equipment.

Entry deadline is July 6.
