The idea came about to enter the Aldington Soapbox Derby, to compete again a group of our 4th year apprentices. But as it is ready and just finished a successful test run we are joining in with the fun at
We are a team of maintenance technicians; it was designed by Steve and mainly built by him. Paul assisted with the welding and upholstery, Bobby manufactured the axle brackets. We out sourced the precision machining work to another work colleague Gerald, who did a great job on the steering axle and brake adaptors.
Spec is
Wheel base is 1600mm
Track is 1000mm
20inch, 14mm axle, 48 spoke BMX wheels.
160mm cable operated disc brakes working on the rear axle.

Aldington race
Silver DART had a very successful second outing, by winning the Aldington soapbox Derby just beating the long standing hill champion by tenths of a second.
We where jointed by three other newly built carts from our works.
One built by some of the third year apprentices, another built by the fourth year apprentices and one built by Team Leaders. All three went well, picking up a number of prizes.Silver DART had some updates carried out after the
It was a grand day out, the weather was hot, the beer was cold and in the large crowd there were many friends and family watching and cheering us on.
Before the going down the hill first time I, like some of the other drivers was feeling very apprehensive, the adrenaline rush was immense, the cart recorded a hill time of 54 second with a max speed of 49MPH.
A great big thanks go to all the people who made the day happen, I know a lot of effort went into it and that was shown by how well the day ran. I can't wait to do it all again in the future.
